Wooden Spoon 2019 Charity Bike Ride

Wooden Spoon West Kent ‘Club TogetherCycle Challenge 2019

Following last year’s successful inaugural Challenge, which raised £37,000 for Kent ‘Spoon’, it will be happening again in 2019.  Last year the Club supported the event but we didn’t enter any riders.  Let’s make it different this year and show our support for this worthwhile charity.

On Sunday 2nd June 2019, more than 200 riders are expected to visit as many as 15 rugby clubs in West Kent over 100 miles of open roads.  For those not up to the challenge, there are also two 65 mile options.  All the routes are circular and riders start and finish at their own rugby club.

This event is not a race and is not marshalled.  Each rider is provided with a Strava route commencing and finishing at their own club relating to the distance they’ve entered.  Club reps and volunteers will be available at each club to assist riders as they proceed, and there will be refreshment stops at various intervals along the route.

Having exceeded all expectations for fundraising in 2018, Kent ‘Spoon’ would like to post a challenging target for this year of £50,000.  However, in order to do this they will need to attract even more riders.

The ‘Club Together Kent 2019 Cycle Challenge’ website is now fully operational at  Registering to ride could be just the incentive you need to get training, in an effort to shift any excess pounds you put on over Christmas, and those ABRFC members who have already expressed an interest are certainly not in the first flush of youth and they have figures more suited to baggy clothes rather than figure-hugging lycra!  So, regardless of your cycling experiences or fitness, why not get training and join us – the event is open to rugby players, friends and family alike.

If you are not into cycling or are unable to join in for other reasons, as for last year, they’re looking for both corporate and individual sponsorship.  Details of sponsorship packages are available on the website and don’t forget, this is a Partnership event so the Club benefits too.

Whilst you need to sign up individually, it would be helpful to keep track of all cyclists so we can possibly link folk together for some training rides, particularly when the weather starts to improve.  So, when you sign up, please flick an e-mail to Kevin Burbidge at
